The centre of Groningen will be transformed into an ice skating rink during the Xmas period.
Those interested will able to don their skates from 26th November until 6th of January, confirmed a tourist information spokesman .
The rink will open daily from 9am until 11pm, as “Groningen on ice” takes over the Gote Markt in this popular Dutch pastime.
A roof has now been added, as the organisers look to keep the rain off the 700 square metre rink.
Martini tower will remain in view despite addition of the roof, explains Bas Van Ghlan, the general manager of The 3 Sisters.
The 3 Sisters are leaving no stone unturned, drafting in new sculptures with the aim to provide an extra festive touch.
The new lighting effects will add an extra theatrical dimension, continues Bas. “This year will be bigger, better and different” he confirms. For those with a few reservations about stepping onto the ice, Bas explains there is a restaurant overlooking the rink. People will be able to watch their friends and family in, warmth whilst sipping a bit of festive glühwein.
Prices vary overall. For groups of school children, the entry fee is 5 euros. For the general public the price is 7.50 Euros, confirms Bas.
